When the turn comes around, the player with the lowest hand (or a higher card) is said to “check.” This means that he will stay in the hand and not make another bet. However, he is obligated to make a bet if he is dealt a pair. If he does not make a bet, he is said to “drop” the hand.
The player to the left of the button is required to make a small blind. The small blind is a $1 bet that must be made by each player. Once the small blind has been paid, the player to the left of the button posts the big blind. The big blind is a $2 bet that must be made by each player. If no other player makes a bet during the next betting interval, the pot is won by the highest-ranking hand.
Poker variants have different rules for dealing cards. In the traditional poker game, the player to the left of the button deals the cards face up.
